My very first blog? Honestly… it was just a hobby project that I threw online without the slightest clue about how blogging actually worked. Five years ago, I didn’t know you could make money from a blog, didn’t understand traffic, and had zero strategy. Spoiler alert: it showed. I failed pretty spectacularly.
And not just once, but twice. Yep. Two full blogs gone down the “what-was-I-even-doing” drain. Only after taking several blogging and marketing courses did I realize how clueless I’d been. Luckily, giving it another shot turned out to be the best decision ever.
Whether you dream of earning a bit of passive income or eventually turning your blog into your main source of income, one thing is true: you need a strategy. Many bloggers are earning real money online, but they’re not doing it by accident.

If you’re just starting out, you probably have the same questions I had in the beginning. Blogging can feel HUGE and a bit scary at first, but remember, every successful blogger once started exactly where you are now: confused, Googling everything, and hoping it magically works out.
That’s why this blog is here: to help you start your own blog and actually earn money with it. Today. Yes, really.
Blogging isn’t as simple as throwing a few posts online and hoping for the best. You’ll need a plan and a bit of patience. But with the right strategy, you can absolutely turn your blog into something profitable. I know bloggers in so many niches: travel, food, lifestyle, parenting, finance, DIY, homesteading, self-improvement, who are making a great living.
How Much Money Can You Really Make?
Does every blogger become full-time? Nope. But many do. And many make nothing at all… usually because they start without a strategy. I did that too. Twice. Don’t be like old me. Be like “the new you,” the version who knows what they’re doing right from the start.
So if you’re wondering, “How much money can a blog actually make?” the short answer is: anywhere from pennies to six figures. It depends on your niche, consistency, and strategy. My first blogs made absolutely nothing, so let’s just say I’ve learned every mistake the hard way. But that’s why I’m sharing everything here… so you don’t waste years as I did.
When is the right time to start a blog?
Honestly? Right now! People often ask, “Am I too late to start?” Nope. The internet isn’t shrinking, it’s exploding with new opportunities every year.
A great example: only recently did companies start recognizing the power of online creators. Instead of spending money on celebrities, brands now LOVE working with bloggers, Instagrammers, YouTubers, and small niche influencers. That means more opportunities than ever to earn money with your blog.
The online world is massive, constantly growing, and full of space for new voices. There are endless ways to monetize, and new ones keep popping up. So if starting a blog has been in your mind… today is a perfect day to begin. Don’t let fear slow you down.
You don’t need a big budget to start earning money blogging
When I started, I spent almost nothing. So, for you, your expenses might include:
- – A computer
- – A hosting platform (I use Bluehost)
- – Maybe a course or an eBook
- – An email list provider, like Brevo (free)
But none of this is required on day one. You can start your entire first year of blogging for under $100. No need to pay for fancy tools or an email list right away.
Driving traffic can also be completely free. Just use social media like Instagram, Pinterest, Threads, Facebook, X. Canva is free too, so you can make posts and reels without paying a cent.
Just remember: blogging isn’t a “get rich quick” thing. Google SEO takes months to kick in, sometimes 6 to 12 months. It’s a long game, but absolutely worth it. Keep this in mind, to not give up too soon.
Start a self-hosted blog
If you want to make money, you must be self-hosted. A free blog is fine for hobbies, but not for earning an income.
I always recommend WordPress.org (self-hosted) on Bluehost. Avoid WordPress.com and Blogger if your goal is to monetize.
Being self-hosted means you look professional, and brands will take you seriously. Self-hosted means you own your blog completely, and nobody can delete your site without warning. And (bonus!) it only costs a few dollars a month, including your domain name.
Advertisers, companies, and readers will know you have a free website, and that looks unprofessional. Advertisers and (affiliate) companies do not want to work with you. Plus, your blog can be deleted at any time and for no reason if you are using a free version, which actually happened to my coach (the horror!). Even though you may save some money in the beginning, not being self-hosted can hurt your chances of earning money through your blog.
Trust me on this one: all bloggers who make money blogging have a self-hosted blog. So, go with self-hosted WordPress, and it will significantly increase your chances of monetizing your blog. What should you blog about to make money?
Start with something you genuinely care about. If you can talk about a topic all day, write about it. People can feel authenticity, and that’s what builds a loyal audience.
A common misconception is that you need to blog about blogging to make money. Nope! The only reason you see income reports in that niche is that it fits the topic. Most other bloggers simply don’t share their income publicly.
I know successful bloggers in every niche imaginable: food, fashion, DIY, finance, travel, lifestyle, pets, fitness, relationships, self-help, business, homesteading, and even people who just write about their everyday life.
So how do you pick your niche? Ask yourself: What blogs do I love reading? What am I passionate about? What am I an expert in? What am I learning right now?
You don’t need to be a professional. Readers love following someone who’s learning and sharing the journey, mistakes included.
Use images. But do it safely
Images make your posts easier to read and more engaging. But please don’t grab pictures from Google or Pinterest; you can get into legal trouble, and it’s just not fair to the creators.
Similar to how you wouldn’t want someone to copy and paste a blog post of yours, you shouldn’t take photos without permission. So, please don’t do that.
Use your own photos (even if they’re perfectly imperfect!) and free stock photos from sites like Pexels and Ivory Mix. Both offer great images you can use on your blog and social media. They add new photos monthly, and you can use them on your blog, social media, and more. Plus, both come with unlimited download access.
What kinds of blogs make money?
Well, any kind of blog can be monetized! To earn money blogging, your blog can be about anything you like. It’s entirely up to you. Here are some possible blog topic ideas to help you figure out what to blog about. The list doesn’t end here either. Choose one, or some. Think about what I talked about before: if it’s your passion, you can write about it. Here are some ideas:

The beauty of having a blog is that it can be about anything, and you can still earn money from it. But, avoid giving legal or tax advice unless you’re a professional; you don’t want that kind of responsibility as a beginner.
You could get someone (and yourself!) in a lot of trouble if you gave them the wrong information. So it’s better to stay away from that as a beginner blogger!

This is the million-dollar question — literally!
There’s no universal answer.
Some bloggers make their first income in 3–6 months. Others need a year… or longer.
And some never make anything at all.
My first blog earned exactly one dollar after a full year, and honestly, that was a miracle because I did everything wrong.
No SEO, bad affiliate links, zero social media, no strategy.
I also refused to ask for help because I thought I had to do everything alone.
Spoiler: That was a terrible plan.
Once I invested in a few good courses and actually learned how blogging works, everything changed.
